We wanted to update our community on the precautions Heritage Humane Society is making to help keep everyone safe and healthy. Heritage Humane Society is closely monitoring the Coronavirus Pandemic. We will continue to refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other public health agencies to determine the safest course of action for everyone who enters our facility. The health and safety of our staff, volunteers, guests, and pets are always a top priority.

We are continuing to operate as normal, however in an effort to reduce to risk of exposure, we are taking some extra precautions.

STARTING SUNDAY, MARCH 15 we have ceased all visits in the shelter and will be switching over to an APPOINTMENT-ONLY SYSTEM FOR POTENTIAL ADOPTIONS. We are asking our community members who are interested in adopting to visit our website first and contact us my email and/or phone to set up a scheduled time to come into the shelter.

  • [email protected]
  • 757-221-0150 (Our Front Desk Team can be contacted by phone between the hours of 8 AM – 4:30 PM daily. Due to the increased frequency of calls, we ask that if you don’t reach someone or if you call after hours – please leave a detailed voicemail with your contact information).

We are looking towards adopting out as many animals as we can over the next couple of weeks. In an effort to help the pets in our care get adopted and to keep the public informed we will be increasing the amount of posts we do on our social media pages. Our website will also continue to be updated every 30 minutes with the current available pets up for adoption. Click HERE to view our adoptable pets.

We remain appointment only for owner surrenders and we are still available for stray pet intakes from 8 AM – 4 PM daily. Please do not hesitate to call us with any questions or concerns.

We have also made some changes to some of our upcoming community events.

  • All volunteer orientations for the next two weeks have been postponed.
  • Fido Fest – March 21 – has been canceled by James City County.
  • Maga Yard Sale – has been rescheduled from March 28 to May 30.
  • All community and school presentations are on hold.

Please know that our staff team stands ready to provide the top-level care the pets in our shelter receive on a daily basis. We will continue to update our community with any changes to our operations. We are grateful for our amazing community support. We will get through these turbulent times together.

HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

We are in need of supply donations to prepare for the coming weeks of uncertainty. Below are the items we are most in need of. We are currently NOT accepting open bags of pet food, linens, towels, or any yard sale donations.  If you are dropping off supply donations at the shelter we ask you do so between the hours of 8 AM – 4:30 PM while we have staff at the shelter. We have removed the green donation bin that was located in front of our shelter so that we no longer receive donations after hours. This is for the safety of our staff. You can also purchase supply items from our Amazon Wish List from the comfort of your home and have items shipped directly to our shelter!

  • Sealed bags of pet food and treats
  • Paper towels
  • Toilet paper
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Laundry Detergent (H/E washers)

Your monetary donation today helps us get through the next few months of uncertainty. Please consider making a donation that will directly benefit the homeless pets in need of help. Please make your gift HERE.
