Volunteer FAQ’s

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Volunteer Program
Question: I’m a college student and can’t volunteer during the summer.  Can I still volunteer?
Answer:  Absolutely!  Absences of up to 4 months will not affect your volunteer status.

Question: I haven’t volunteered for a while, can I come back?
Answer:  We would love to have you return to HHS!  If you have been away for longer than 4 months, we will have you come in for a refresher before you begin volunteering with the animals.

Question: I’m a member of a group that is looking for volunteer opportunities in the community.  Can we volunteer at HHS?
Answer:  Sure! Email [email protected]

Question: I can’t volunteer during the school year due to academic and extra-curricular commitments.  Can I still volunteer?
Answer:  You can! Complete the appropriate volunteer application, scan and email it to [email protected].  Make sure you indicate when you are available to volunteer on your application.

Question: I’m a teacher or group leader and would like to schedule a tour.  How do I go about doing that?
Answer:  The preferred way is for you to send an email to [email protected] with the name of your group, the number of people who will be going on the tour, and at least two possible dates.  Someone will get back to you within 3 business days. If email isn’t available, you may call 757-221-0150, extension 1001 to speak to someone or leave a message.

Question: Are there other ways I can volunteer outside of the shelter?
Answer:  YES! You can join our Auxiliary Volunteer Team. Learn more here >>
