Auxiliary Programs & Events

The HHS Auxiliary is comprised of people with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. We constantly seek to increase our level of involvement with new events, programs, and community engagement initiatives. a diversity of skills; no matter what your background, you can help. We need bakers, marketers, social media expertise, knitters, advocates, grant writers, technologists, volunteer coordinators, as well as community and business leaders. We invite you to join our dynamic group. You will enrich your life and those of our animals as you make lifelong friendships.

HHSA meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 10:15 am in the Heritage Humane Society classroom. The shelter is located at 430 Waller Mill Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23185.

In January/February, we hope you’ll participate in our annual Hearts for Homeless Pets fundraiser by purchasing paper hearts to show your love for pets. You can customize your heart(s) with up to THREE names of pet lovers, pets, or the names of adoptable pets at The Heritage Humane Society. 

We are asking for a $10 or more donation per heart. The hearts will be displayed in our adoption center front lobby (located at 430 Waller Mill Rd., Williamsburg, VA) from Jan. 10 through the end of February. Mark your calendars! Our Golf Classic will be on Friday, September 11, 2026. Join us for a day of spectacular golf, and delicious food including a hot sandwich breakfast and a lunch buffet, cold beer, contest holes, and camaraderie at Kingsmill Resort. Williamsburg’s Highly-Anticipated Holiday Benefit Event for Homeless Pets!

Our annual Holiday Bazaar will be on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at Bruton Parish Hall in Williamsburg from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  This staple event is back this holiday season and is a tradition in Williamsburg. We have something for everyone on your holiday shopping list (furry and human)! There will be amazing hand-crafted fabric creations, gourmet soups from local Williamsburg restaurants, fantastic raffle prizes, homemade baked goods, gift baskets, and MORE! The long-standing tradition of the Fur Tree, in honor of pets and homeless animals, is placed each year in front of our adoption center. The tree is put up each year on the weekend following Thanksgiving and remains there until after New Years’.

The fear and anxiety that comes with being abused, lost, and abandoned can be overwhelming for our homeless pets. Although they are treated with great care by both the Heritage Humane Society staff and the dedicated volunteers, adjusting to new surroundings takes time. Wanting to help make the transition more calming to all the shelter animals.

Generous volunteers create handmade blankets for every dog and cat that gets adopted at Heritage Humane Society. More than 15,000 blankets have been given out since “Precious Pieces” started several years ago. If you like to knit, crochet or sew, please email [email protected] to learn more.

A booth at the Williamsburg Antique Mall is provided to us without charge in return for our members donating time on Fridays to package and wrap mall purchases at the front desk.

Members of the Auxiliary and community support our mission to raise money for the shelter by donating items to sell in our booth. If you have items to donate or would like to volunteer, please email [email protected]

One of the Auxiliary’s longstanding fundraising methods is our Critter Canister program. We place canisters in almost 100 Williamsburg businesses. Each month, members collect the money from their assigned canisters and deliver it to the Heritage Humane Society Finance Director. The Monticello Avenue Belk store hosts sales to benefit local charities throughout the year. Heritage Humane Society Auxiliary volunteers sell sale admission tickets to customers. Heritage Humane Society showcases adoptable dogs at the events to attract interest and stimulate shelter conversations. These sales raise money for the shelter. Auxiliary members sell tickets to friends and family members prior to the sale day. Volunteers also sell tickets at the store on the sale day.
