Where were 355 dogs in Greater Williamsburg this past weekend? Perfecting their cannonballs at Drool in the Pool in support of their homeless counterparts at The Heritage Humane Society.

Record breaking pool party

The record-breaking attendance of 355 dogs soared over last year’s 250 pups, which also set a record. Held for the first time on a Sunday, this past Sept. 17, 2023, the event supporting the nonprofit brought together hundreds of people with their dogs for a fun-filled day at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park Pool. For a donation of $10 per dog, Drool in the Pool provided one day a year access for area pups to swim at the pool made possible by the generosity of the dedicated staff of the James City County Parks & Recreation.

From the shallow end to the deep end, dogs made the most of this annual end-of-summer pool tradition. They doggie paddled, dove in, chased water toys, and mingled. Their human companions watched all the fun and quickly learned to move fast out of the splash zone before their dogs started shaking themselves dry.

Along with the sounds of belly flops and laughter, music filled the air and attendees could enjoy pool snacks. After fun in the pool, pups were able to get tidied up as Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash was a part of the event again this year. They provided 81 dog baths and 54 nail trims and generously donated 100% of the proceeds to the shelter.

Shelter staff were joined by 25 shelter volunteers including 10 volunteers from William and Mary to “lifeguard” the excitement had by all at Drool in the Pool.

Capture the moment

Wendy Nelson Photography came to the event taking professional photos of all the splish splashing joy. The public is welcome to view the full photo album from the day. For those who purchase photos, those proceeds will benefit the more than 200 homeless pets currently under the care of The Heritage Humane Society.

Stay tuned for the 2024 Drool in the Pool date to be announced in coming months.
