Mark the calendar for fall and holiday events that bring together the community while benefiting the homeless pets at The Heritage Humane Society. From this month’s Adoptober Fest to supporting area pet-loving businesses, from the annual community favorite of the Holiday Bazaar and Soup Sale to bedecking the Holiday “Fur” Tree, and from experiencing the Williamsburg Christmas Market, and yes, even a little magic, there are so many ways to enjoy the upcoming weeks while also making a difference right here in the community.

Don’t miss calendar events

The turning colors of the leaves will soon give way to the twinkling lights of the holiday season. Feel good happenings that benefit Greater Williamsburg’s largest homeless pet shelter include:
  • Adoptober Fest. Now through Oct. 31, 2024, celebrate fall by adopting one of the shelter’s available kittens or cats for only $31 during the Adoptober Fest.

  • R.F. Wilkinson Family YMCA Fall Festival. Being held Oct. 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. The family-friendly fall fun event will have vendors, an aquatic pumpkin patch, trunk-or-treat and games. Be sure to visit The Heritage Humane Society’s event table.
  • Williamsburg Jewelers Monthly Pet Visits. On Oct. 26, Nov. 23 and Dec. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, visit community supporter Williamsburg Jewelers to shop for special gifts and keepsakes. While there, meet one of the shelter’s adoptable dogs whose adoption fee has so generously been sponsored by Williamsburg Jewelers.
  • The Williamsburg Society of American Magicians Friends & Family Halloween Show. Celebrate the magic of the season on Oct. 26 from 3 to 5 p.m. at this family friendly magic show. The Heritage Humane Society is the charity for this event, which will be collecting supply and monetary donations. Look for the shelter’s event booth.
  • Belk Fall Charity Event. On Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Nov. 7 from 3 to 5 p.m., and Nov. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m., visit the HHS Auxiliary information table inside the Belk in Williamsburg to purchase a couple coupons. Proceeds go to support the shelter’s homeless pets. An adoptable dog will be at each event.
  • Cat Yoga. Stretch with the purr-fect yoga friends, some of the adoptable shelter cats. Come Nov. 9 at 8:30 a.m. to The Heritage Humane Society. Bring a mat and water, along with a $20 donation for the furry feline friends.
  • 2nd Sundays at Nautical Dog. Nov. 9 and Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., stop by the area’s most popular, independently owned pet supply store, Schwartzy’s Cat Cove located at Nautical Dog in New Town. Visit an adoptable Heritage Humane Society dog while stocking up on the healthiest pet food and cutest accessories while meeting adoptable cats.
  • Virginia Cat Festival 2024. The shelter is the charity for this event. Enjoy special guests, film screenings, performances, workshops, panels, marketplace vendors, and more, celebrating all things feline. This two-day event begins Nov. 9 at the Kimball Theatre, where Kimberly Laska, CAWA, Executive Director of The Heritage Humane Society will do a short talk before the CatVideoFest movie view. Also, attend the Virginia Cat Festival 2024 on Nov. 10 from 12 to 7 p.m. at the Williamsburg Lodge, visit the shelter’s booth.
  • Kids Movie Night. On Nov. 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., kids can enjoy dinner, a craft and movie at the shelter along with fun friends as parents enjoy some time to themselves. Registration required for Kids Movie Nights.
  • 2024 Holiday Bazaar. One of Greater Williamsburg’s favorite holiday events, the Holiday Bazaar, will be Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Holiday shopping includes homemade gifts, food, pet presents and gift baskets. Enjoy raffles and community camaraderie. For those who shopped ahead for the Soup Sale, this is only the day for soup pick-ups.
  • Holiday Fur Tree. From Nov. 30 through Jan. 5, 2025, join this long-standing tradition of purchasing a festive red bow to have personalized for a favorite pet or pet lover. New for 2024, the Holiday Fur Tree will be displayed at The Heritage Humane Society.
  • Giving Tuesday. This nationwide event on Dec. 3 lets donors impact the pressing needs of their favorite charities including The Heritage Humane Society. Giving Tuesday is a much-appreciated opportunity that provides care for the shelter’s pets in-need as they prepare for a second chance at life.
  • Holiday Paint Your Pet Portrait. Come for a fun, creative evening on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. to make holiday art celebrating the family or a friend’s pet. Presented by Pass that Brush, $10 of each entry fee will be donated to support the shelter’s pets.
  • Williamsburg Christmas Market. Stroll for gifts and feel the warmth of the holiday season at the Williamsburg Christmas Market. Come Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and be sure to stop by the HHS Auxiliary market booth. Proceeds raised benefit the shelter’s pets.
  • Dog Yoga. Who better to practice Downward Dog and more than with some of the shelter’s adoptable dogs as they wait for their fur-ever homes. Bring water, mat and a $20 donation.
  • Winter Camp. Kids can start the new year inspired by the shelter’s animal winter camp. Held Jan. 2 and 3, they will get hands-on experience learning about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership while having fun with new friends and making memories.
  • Vision Boarding. Bring visions to life with this vision board class. Registration includes supplies, however, feel free to bring magazines.

Adoptable pets ready to join the fun

More than 250 dogscats and small pets are currently in the shelter’s care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from 12 to 4:30 p.m., Tues. through Sun.
