The Heritage Humane Society has always been a beacon of hope for the community’s four legged friends in need. Each adoption story is a tale of transformation, love and new beginnings. For those who enjoy following the stories of adopted shelter dogs, here are a few peeks into their new lives. With so many pups of all types and ages available at Greater Williamsburg’s largest animal shelter, there are many opportunities for the community who are looking to adopt and help give a dog a new chance at life.
Where are they now?
Recent dog adoptions have already charted heartwarming journeys for both adopters and the dogs they opened their homes for over the past few months. Here are a few inspiring updates on our beloved dogs who have found their forever families.

Lexus (now Lexi). Lexus, a 10-year-old terrier mix, came to the shelter in March when her owner surrendered her. She was battling a skin infection and missing most of her fur. Affectionately known as the shelter’s “happy hippo,” she was adopted by Rebecca Hubbard on June 8. Rebecca shares, “We fell in love with this little house hippo! Lexi is the sweetest snuggle bug with a bit of sass that makes her even more adorable. She’s brightened our home and we love hearing her little tippy toes throughout the house. Thank you, Heritage Humane Society!”

Butterscotch (now Ginger). Butterscotch, a three-year-old pit bull terrier mix, returned to the shelter in July 2023 after her family moved. Her adoption fee was kindly sponsored by Williamsburg Jewelers. Adopted by Shelby Carlson on June 22, Shelby says, “Adopting Ginger was the best decision. Her excited tippy taps and aggressive cuddles are the highlight of our day. She keeps us on our toes and always makes us smile. We’re so happy to be her forever family.”

Daria (now Roo). Daria, a one-year-old mixed breed, was found as a stray in May and became a “foster fail” for Elizabeth Eldredge, an HHS volunteer. A “foster fail” is an affectionate term for a person who begins fostering a shelter pet temporarily and ends up choosing to adopt them permanently. Adopted on July 10, Elizabeth says, “Roo, formerly known as Daria, has become the heart and soul of our household. She’s a tiny whirlwind of joy and has embraced every moment with love and curiosity. Start a new chapter together today
There are many dogs available at the shelter today who are hoping to begin their next chapter with their forever families. The shelter also has a lot of support such as dog training classes and events to enrich the lives of local dogs. The community is invited to meet some of the nearly 230 dogs, cats and small pets that are currently in the shelter’s care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from noon to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
