The 27th annual United Way Day of Caring took place on Friday, Sept. 18, and across the Virginia Peninsula, 54 projects were completed by 572 dedicated volunteers. The Heritage Humane Society partnered once again with the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula for this event, welcoming a group of 19 enthusiastic volunteers from Ball Corporation to lend their time and energy to several important projects.

Ball Corporation volunteers step up for long-awaited shelter projects

The James City County-located Ball Metal team tackled several tasks to help improve the shelter’s grounds and facilities. The volunteers took on essential yard work duties, including leaf blowing, trimming low-hanging branches, weed removal and clearing fallen trees. They also power-washed the adoption center’s exterior, sidewalks and brick garden, refreshing the entire area.

Additionally, they completed a significant clean-out of the shelter’s annex building, organizing and disposing of broken and rusted crates, pallets, furniture and other items. The effort resulted in approximately six to seven truckloads of debris being hauled away to the dump.

Visitors stopping by The Heritage Humane Society that day were instantly impressed by the noticeable improvements.
Angelique Crawford, Volunteer Manager at The Heritage Humane Society, praised the group’s hard work, saying, “The Heritage Humane Society could not have asked for a better group of people to help us clean up our outside areas. Ball Corporation sent an industrious group of eager employees who stepped up and worked well together. We really appreciated the level of follow through on the assigned projects and their passionate work is on display for all to enjoy.
The Ball Williamsburg Team wrote, “At Ball, we have a long-standing commitment to supporting the communities where we live and work, and we believe that doing so is an integral part of who we are. Ball Williamsburg is passionate about what we do and how we do it. Our success is shaped by the communities that sustain us and the causes that matter most to us. Ball Williamsburg enjoyed volunteering at The Heritage Human as we celebrated “Who We Are Month” during the 2024 United Way Day of Caring and look forward to a continued partnership supporting this cause.”

More than 1,000 active volunteers

The Heritage Humane Society’s success relies heavily on the dedication of its volunteers. With more than 1,000 active individuals involved, the volunteer program covers a wide range of roles, from shelter volunteers and foster caregivers to board members and HHS Auxiliary volunteers.
In 2023 alone, shelter volunteers logged an impressive 20,874 hours of service, and 867 animals found temporary homes through the shelter’s foster care program, managed by Hannah Cullen, Foster Care Coordinator.

Many opportunities to easily join the volunteer network

Caring for Greater Williamsburg’s largest population of homeless pets includes so many activities and areas of expertise to function successfully, so, there are many opportunities for those seeking to help. For those inspired by the work of the Ball Metal volunteers and want to make a difference, The Heritage Humane Society offers several ways to get involved. The shelter relies on its vast network of volunteers for everything from caring for animals to assisting with events. Whether someone wants to volunteer their time or become a foster caregiver, there are opportunities for everyone.

Pets ready for a “Lifetime of Caring”
