Our Fido Field Trip Program encourages HHS trained volunteers to take our adoptable dogs for outings and adventures in the community. The field trip is often tailored to the dog’s personality! Common outings include a car drive, a hike, a trip to a beach, a visit to a volunteer’s home, or even a nice stroll in Colonial Williamsburg. These outings help the dogs in our care manage kennel stress, burn off energy and get more exposure in the community! Our dogs wear bright orange “Adopt Me” vests while they are out in the community. This allows them to get noticed and sometimes even adopted! It is also a great way for us to learn more about the dog’s personality outside the shelter environment. It’s also a great excuse to get out and get some exercise or explore with a canine sidekick!
With the weather getting warmer, we are encouraging our volunteers that have been trained to walk/socialize with the dogs to do more Fido Field Trips! Below are some great spots you can take the dogs in Williamsburg!
Not a volunteer yet? Click below to learn more about our volunteer program and the many ways you can positively impact the lives of homeless pets. Please note, in order to handle/walk the dogs you MUST be 16 years or older and go through the volunteer training.
Historic Jamestowne-Although the buildings are off-limits to pets at Historic Jamestowne, you can walk leashed animals anywhere on the grounds. Once you purchase tickets, staff will direct you to the pet-friendly entrance and give instructions on rules regarding your 4 legged friend.
Williamsburg Botanical Gardens – This 2-acre garden is located in Freedom Park. Admission is free and they actively encourage dogs to visit!
Hardware stores – Places like Lowes, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply can be a great place for a dog to get out and about and practice their social skills.
Take a dog out for lunch! – The Hound’s Tale Corner Barkery in Downtown Williamsburg is completely dog friendly inside and out! Many restaurants in the area also have patios that are dog-friendly. You can even go out for dessert with Bruster’s Real Ice Cream offering pup cups! If unsure how a dog might do, feel free to just do a drive-thru and picnic in the car.
Your home! – If you have no other pets in your home, your house can be a great Fido Field Trip location. The change of scenery is great for them, and photos of dogs in a home setting really helps potential adopters imagine adding the dog to their lives too!
Williamsburg Antique Mall – Located off of Lightfoot Rd, this 45,000 sq. foot antique mall is pet friendly with well-behaved, leashed dogs.
Duke of Gloucester Street (DoG Street) – Located in Colonial Williamsburg, DoG Street is a great place to take a dog on a Fido Field Trip.
