Area runners, walkers, and their canine companions can now register for FURever Homes Race to benefit the homeless pets at The Heritage Humane Society. Now in its fourth year, this fun event is for everyone of all ages, from serious runners as it is a Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix event to casual joggers and supportive onlookers. Attendees can shop throughout Vendor Village and enjoy being spectators at the dog contests.

Take your mark for the bark

FURever Homes Race is Sat., June 10, 2023. The Vendor Village and the start and finish for the race will be located in the parking lot of Jamestown High School. Participants can register for the 8k, 5k, one-mile Fun Run or be a virtual participant. The trail winds along picturesque Greensprings Trail and the Capital Trail.

Participants register online for the race. Spectators are complimentary for viewing the race and enjoying Vendor Village. Early bird registration is now through May 31, 2023. Beginning on June 1, 2023, the race entry fees will increase by $5 and race officials can no longer guarantee participants will receive the 2023 race t-shirt.

As an official Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix event, Colonial Road Runners’ members who are runners and walkers are eligible to earn Grand Prix points that can accumulate over the year. One-mile Fun Run participants and virtual participants will receive participation medals. The FURever Homes Race kicks off with the opening of Vendor Village at 7 a.m. The one-mile Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. The 8k event begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 5k start at 8:50 a.m. Featured at the main stage, dog contests will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by raffle drawings at 10 a.m., concluding with the awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

How to hit the ground running

The Pre-Race Packet Pick-Up will be at Spoke + Art Provisions Co. on Fri., June 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. Racer packets will include one free raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the pre-race pick-up and on the day of the event.

Dog contests

Dog owners are encouraged to enter their talented pups into any of the three contests. Entry is free and can be done online before race day or on the day of the race. Categories include:

• Stellar Senior (>7 years old)

• Best Pet Costume

• Best Pet Trick

Shop to support local homeless pets

Vendor Village is a highlight every year. The Tide Radio, the Media Sponsor for FURever Homes Race, will be playing music and pumping up the crowd. Event participants can enjoy healthy snacks from EarthFare Williamsburg and complimentary coffee and tea from Starbucks of Williamsburg Marketplace.

The Heritage Humane Society has more than 200 adoptable dogs, cats and small pets currently in their care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from 12 to 4:30 p.m., Tues. through Sun.
