She’s spry, not like a marathon runner striving to best personal records, rather, spry to seize all the goodness she seeks – simple strolls around town, farmers’ market visits, head scratches and cuddles. Gentle Gemma has witnessed 292 shelter dogs find their forever homes ahead of her and is wishing with all her might that her turn is next. Her adoption fee is already covered. The shelter is also providing 50% off dog adoptions now through July 23, 2023.

Gemma has been at The Heritage Humane Society since August 14, 2022. Lovingly nicknamed “Gemma Bemma,” this lovely lady is an eight-year-old pit/terrier mix. She’s a looker with her beautiful coat of black and white fur. Gemma is as sweet as can be, quite smart, and not afraid to use her heart-melting superpowers on you. She already has everyone at The Heritage Humane Society wrapped around her paws.

A heartbreaking goodbye

This sweet girl had to sadly be surrendered more than 11 months ago because her owner became ill and could no longer care for her. Her family of eight years was suddenly gone. Gemma’s new reality sadly became shelter life, a heartbreak for the love bug.

Turnkey for the win

Carefree puppies and cuddly kittens are commonly thought of when adopting pets. Yet, not everyone looking to adopt is up for the potty training, waking up in the middle of the night play sessions, and behavioral training that little ones need. In other words, wouldn’t it be really nice if all of this was already taken care of when adopting a pet? Look no further than gentle Gemma.

Gemma is at the wonderful phase in a dog’s life where she is young enough to play and is always up for a walk, but she also loves the leisurely life of chilling at home. She also enjoys the company of other dogs.
Everyone who has met and loved on Gemma can attest, in fact, a generous donor has already paid for her adoption fee, so all she needs is to find her forever family. Months ago Gemma enjoyed some shelter breaks in the home of a foster mom who absolutely adores her, however, the foster mom’s career includes lots of travel. Gemma loves getting a break from the shelter for a few hours with Fido Field Trips. From walks around Colonial Williamsburg, and playing ball in a field, to swimming at nearby beaches, the shelter always has pups who would love a field trip and some one-on-one time. Fido Field Trips are a part of the volunteer program at the shelter.

This said, Gemma wants and needs something beyond infrequent breaks. This obedient little lady wants to find her forever home where she can go for car rides, enjoy nature and be a sofa buddy.
Two weeks ago, WYDaily readers learned about Alice, another pup who was coming up on a year at the shelter – a milestone no homeless pet wants to celebrate. Sweet Alice, who shared wonderful traits like Gemma including excellent behavior and a desire to love unconditionally, was adopted. Her new family, Steve, Nicholas and Maya Sirles excitedly share that Alice, “wasted no time in joining right in and making herself a high ranking member of the family! She was so excited on the ride home, wanting to see out the windows. She has explored all around the yard and the neighborhood. She plays with all her toys until she conks out and enjoys sleeping on her bed, rug or her new favorite spot, the sofa. She is doing great and we are so glad to have her in our home!”

50% off dog adoption fees

While Gemma’s adoption fee has been completely covered by a kindhearted donor, The Heritage Humane Society is offering 50% off adult dog adoptions now through July 23, 2023. This promotion is for new applications for adult-dogs ready to go home the same day. Open your home and heart to Gemma or one of her canine companions and start making memories today.
The Heritage Humane Society has nearly 250 dogscats and small pets currently in their care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from 12 to 4:30 p.m., Tues. through Sun.
