Our May Volunteer Spotlight is on a generous and kind #HHSVolunteer named Lauren Davis. Lauren has been fostering and volunteering her time with the adoptable dogs at HHS for almost a year. She can be seen at the shelter most weekends walking the dogs and providing them with much-needed time out of their kennels. You might also see Lauren out and about in Williamsburg with our adoptable dogs. She takes our pups to offsite events around Williamsburg to help them meet potential adopters and to get a day out of the shelter to enjoy just being dogs! Her favorite offsite is our monthly visits to Williamsburg Jewelers on the 4th Saturday or every month from 11 am – 1 pm. 

Below are some words from Lauren Davis.

Why did you decide to volunteer at HHS?

I grew up with dogs and have always loved animals. I adopted my first dog as an adult when I was 20, and he was with me for almost 15 years. We first came to Heritage in March 2023, looking for a new best friend when our 2nd senior pup passed away. She was a “fospice” we adopted only 5 months prior who really spurred our love for older dogs. Moving from a small apartment in San Diego to a house here in Williamsburg with a yard, my husband knew that the goal was to adopt as many dogs as possible. We started with one 🙂 Two amazing foster dogs (who have now found their perfect furever homes) later, I was ready to start volunteering onsite and started walking dogs in September. 

What is the most rewarding aspect of volunteering at HHS?

Seeing the happiness and excitement on their faces when you take the dogs out. They are so sweet and have so much love to give, even when they’ve been through so much. Sometimes it’s as simple as sitting on a bench with them while they take in the fresh air to help remind them how to “dog.” The hugs and kisses are a huge added bonus.
