The Summer Olympics sends the air of spirited competition around the world and The Heritage Humane Society invites the Greater Williamsburg community to join in on the fun at its Fourth of July Annual Dog Ice Cream Eating Contest.
Fourth of July Annual Dog Ice Cream Eating Contest
This smile-filled event places the humans as spectators as happy dogs compete to finish their ice cream first. As pet lovers cool off with cold, crisp lagers, ales and more at Billsburg Brewery, dog contestants are invited to chill with the frozen goodness of dog-friendly ice cream.
Up to 40 contestants will be accepted. Ten dogs will compete at a time to eat their ice cream the fastest. The winner from all four heats will then compete in the finals for their place on the podium. Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each heat and the final overall winner. The contest is being held in front of The Hungry Pug Food Truck and the dog-friendly ice cream is being provided by The Meadows Original Frozen Custard.
Registration is open now and is first come, first serve. It is $20 per dog to register. The Heritage Humane Society will also accept walk-up contestants on the day of the event if they have not reached their contestant maximum. The contest kicks off on July 4 at 2 p.m., and all contestants must be there by 1:45 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit the homeless pets at Greater Williamsburg’s largest animal shelter.
There is also fun beyond the paw-some dog ice cream eating contest. People can enter the 50/50 raffle and meet adoptable dogs while enjoying a variety of Williamsburg’s popular beer, delicious food and water views.
Melting hearts, but not melting down
This Fourth of July, The Heritage Humane Society offers tips for pet lovers in keeping their favorite pup friend just as excited to celebrate. To keep dogs from becoming scared, anxious, or even sick, the shelter shares tips that can avoid emergency situations.

Protect from loud noises. Loud fireworks and parties can be extremely scary for pets. Keep them home in a room where they can avoid windows and where they can feel safe.

Avoid common toxins. While the shelter’s Fourth of July Dog Ice Cream Contest provides dog-friendly ice cream, avoid giving pets real ice cream that contain unsafe-for-pet ingredients including diary, sugar and poisonous ingredients such as chocolate or rum raisins. Glow sticks and necklaces can be highly toxic if chewed up and ingested. Be sure that alcohol is placed high along with any meat with bones.

Update microchip and ID tag information. Keep each pet’s microchip and ID tag information updated with current contact information. It’s the best way to have a pet safely returned should they get startled and make a run for it.
Want to join, but don’t have a dog?
The Heritage Humane Society is filled with more adoptable dogs than it has had in years. For pet lovers who would like a more temporary opportunity, the shelter has robust Fido Field Trips, volunteer and fully supported foster volunteer programs.
Over 200 dogs, cats and small pets are currently in their care. Adoptable pets are available to meet during The Heritage Humane Society’s visiting and adopting hours from noon to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.
